In 1997, law enforcement agencies from 18 Minnesota counties received 1,272 forfeited guns. Most of these firearms were involved in criminal activities, others were abandoned or found, or forfeited for illegal possession. Similar to 1996 findings, a majority of forfeitures occurred in the metropolitan area and involved handguns. Eight out of 10 forfeited guns were destroyed. Additional details presented in this annual report mandated by the Legislature relay background information on the mandate, outline steps in the forfeiture process and describe makes, calibers and actions of forfeited firearms.
